Wallbed System FAQs
Are wallbeds safe to use?
Yes—modern wallbed systems, also known as Murphy beds, are engineered with safety as a top priority. At SICO, our wallbed systems feature secure locking mechanisms, reinforced frames, and commercial-grade construction to ensure safe, stable operation.
Our systems are floor or wall-mounted for added stability and designed to prevent accidental closing. When properly installed and operated according to instructions, a SICO Wallbed System is extremely safe for daily use in hospitality, residential, and multi-use environments.
How much weight can a Murphy wallbed hold?
Weight capacity is one of the most common questions we receive, especially from hospitality operators.
SICO wallbeds are engineered to support up to approximately 1,000 pounds (including mattress). They are suitable for adult guests and long-term commercial use. Our heavy-duty steel frame and integrated foundation system ensure that each commercial wallbed unit performs reliably in high-traffic settings.
Can you use a regular mattress in a wallbed?
With many residential Murphy beds, mattress compatibility is limited. That’s not the case with SICO.
Our wallbed systems are designed to accommodate conventional innerspring mattresses, providing the comfort of a traditional bed. The mattress is secured to the foundation with a permanent hook-and-loop strap. The foundation is attached to the frame for stability.
This means your space-saving bed doesn’t sacrifice comfort, and guests enjoy the same sleep experience they would expect from a standard hotel bed.
Do wallbeds come with sofas or desks?
They can, and that’s one of the most popular configurations. By combining seating and sleeping in one footprint, you maximize usable space without compromising design.
SICO offers models such as the Eurobed Wallbed System – 24/7 Sofa, which integrates a comfortable sofa beneath the bed. When the bed is lowered, the sofa remains in place.
This type of Murphy bed with sofa is ideal for:
- Hotel suites
- Studio apartments
- Timeshare properties
- Extended-stay accommodations
What wallbed systems does SICO offer?
SICO offers several commercial-grade wallbed system options designed for flexibility and long-term durability:
Vertical fold models save horizontal floor space. Side-fold models are ideal for lower ceiling heights or tighter vertical constraints.
If you’re considering a Murphy bed, hotel wallbed, or fully customized commercial wallbed unit, we recommend connecting with a SICO factory-authorized dealer in your state. Our team will help you evaluate layout requirements, select the right configuration, and ensure your wallbed system is installed for long-term performance.
How do SICO wallbed systems work?
SICO wallbed systems are engineered to provide a smooth, safe, and space-efficient sleeping solution. Each wallbed system uses a precision compression mechanism that allows the bed to be lowered and raised with minimal effort. The mattress and foundation remain securely attached to the frame, so there’s no need to remove bedding during operation.
When opening the bed:
- The cabinet door panel lowers outward.
- Integrated leg supports automatically deploy for stability.
- The mattress platform glides into position with controlled motion.
- Built-in pillow retention systems help keep bedding neatly in place.
When closing the bed:
- The user gently lifts the platform.
- The compression mechanism assists the upward motion.
- The unit locks securely into its cabinetry housing.
Are SICO wallbeds safe and sturdy for commercial use?
Absolutely. SICO is a global hospitality furniture manufacturer, and our wallbeds are built specifically for commercial environments, not residential DIY applications. That’s why major hotel chains and timeshare properties trust SICO for hotel wallbed installations worldwide.
Key durability features include:
- Heavy-duty steel frame construction
- Secure locking mechanisms
- Commercial-grade cabinetry
- Reinforced foundation attachment
- Engineered load capacity up to ~1,000 lbs
Can a SICO wallbed be customized to our space?
Yes. Customization is one of our core strengths. Our cabinetry is handcrafted in the USA and built for commercial applications. Whether you need a single commercial wallbed unit or a full property rollout, we work with designers and contractors to ensure a seamless fit.

What does wallbed installation involve?
SICO wallbeds are typically floor-mounted for maximum stability. Installing the bed in a finished recess is similar to hanging a steel door—if the frame is true and square, you are unlikely to have any problems. Make sure that all measurements are correct and that the recess is plumb, level, and square.
IMPORTANT: It takes two people to safely assemble the system—do not try to do it by yourself.
Please read and understand the instructions below before you start to assemble:
How is a wallbed different from a mobile sleeper or rollaway bed?
A wallbed is a built-in space-saving bed that folds into cabinetry, while a rollaway bed is a portable, folding frame stored on casters. Many hospitality properties use both to maximize guest flexibility.
If you need:
- A permanent, integrated sleeping solution, choose a wallbed system.
- Flexible overflow sleeping capacity, consider a SICO Mobile Sleeper.
Are wallbeds comfortable enough for everyday use?
Yes. This is a common misconception based on older Murphy bed designs.
SICO wallbeds use:
- Conventional innerspring mattresses
- Attached foundations
- Secure mattress retention systems
Guests experience the comfort of a traditional bed, making these systems ideal for extended stays, studio apartments, and hotel suites where daily use is expected.
Are SICO wallbeds used in hotels?
Yes. In fact, SICO is a trusted partner for many hospitality brands worldwide.
Our hotel wallbed systems are commonly installed in:
- Hotels
- Resorts
- Timeshares
- Corporate housing
- Multifamily developments
